Sydney Royal Easter Show
Looking for something to do over the Easter Holidays? Head to Sydney Olympic Park for the Sydney Royal Easter Show. There are few events as iconically Australian as the Easter shows.
Held for two weeks around the Easter public holidays in every capital city, it began as a way for farmers and graziers to showcase their animals and produce to people in the city. The Sydney Royal Easter Show has been held at various sites around the city since 1823.
It was canned in 1919 when the Spanish Flu broke out and during WWII, evolving over time into Australia’s largest and best-known annual event. Now held at Sydney Olympic park, the Sydney Royal Easter Show attracts some 900,000 visitors every year, and features wood chopping competitions, more than 100 carnival rides and games, art exhibitions, food stalls, live music, extreme sports exhibitions, pet shows and more.
Another big attraction – especially for the kids – is the showbags. Themed along popular food brands, TV shows, toys and sports such as The Smurfs, M&Ms and Thomas the Tank Engine, they come full of toys, sweets, vouchers and surprises.
Not to be missed is the Sydney Royal Rodeo Series – the only international rodeo series in the country. It see’s riders grit their teeth and hang on for dear life as giant bulls try to throw them off their backs. When the riders do come off, it’s up to the rodeo clowns to distract the bulls so the riders don’t get trampled!
Later in the day, the main arena hosts the ‘Showtime Spectacular’. With two and a half hours of horse riders, big bands, country music stars, freestyle motocross displays, a sound and light show as well as fireworks – it’s a great way to cap off a day at the show.
