Supporting students in Africa
In 2016, Iglu became involved with Children’s Fortress Africa after being introduced by a member of the Iglu team who saw a connection between our business and the amazing they are doing.
Co-founded by Ben Hay and Liah Coombs, Children’s Fortress Africa works in Kenya to empower street children and children at risk to reach their potential.
One of the major ways they do this is by funding education sponsorship for talented children who would otherwise miss the life changing opportunity of going to high school. In Kenya, high school is not free and it costs about $300/year to send a child to school. With 43% of the population living on just $1.25 AU a day, many children currently miss out on an education that could break the poverty cycle in their lives.
Iglu agreed that for every 100 beds we operate, we will pay for a child to go to high school. To date our contribution has meant 15 talented children are receiving a high school education who otherwise wouldn’t likely be able to afford it.
Wambui Teresiah and Lydia Wambua, who are now in their first school, are just two of the children who are benefiting from the ongoing efforts of Children’s Fortress Africa. Both girls are from a small town called Kimana, close to the base of Mt Kilimanjaro in southern Kenya, near the Tanzania border.
