Iglu Students Sydney and Brisbane

Cheap eats in Brisbane

It’s not always easy to find the time or energy to cook when you’re finding your way around a new study schedule, and yet you always feel a teensy bit guilty about splurging on an expensive meal when that supermarket is just beckoning you in…

Well, fret no longer. Brisbane has within her folds some of the most delicious foodie hangouts you could ever dream of, and we have picked the cream of the crop that will keep your student budget in check, and tantalise your taste buds along the way.

Eateries no longer fall into the definitive categories of times past. These days, ‘cheap’ doesn’t mean plastic tablecloths and the odd roach scampering past your chair. Consumers have come to expect more, and Brizzy’s diners have definitely delivered. Whether you’re after noodles or burgers, kale or curry, Brisbane has it covered. You’ll get change from a twenty and you won’t leave disappointed – the combination for busy students.

For home-cooked quality Greek food, jostle in alongside the locals at The Little Greek Taverna in Fortitude Valley for mouthwatering moussaka, sizzling souvlakis and tempting tzatziki, with most main courses priced at just $15. You can even BYO! If that’s all greek to you and you’re looking for something a little bit spicier to accompany your margarita, travel no further than The Beach Burrito Company located in both West End and Fortitude Valley. Serving up tasty tacos for just $3 each, take your pick from nachos, burritos and the unmissable chilli fries. It’s your one-stop Mexican shop.

Maybe you’re looking for something a little more simple, or you’re nursing a slight tenderness from the night before… Head over to Statler and Waldorf, on Caxton Street, where they’re dishing up good old-fashioned pub grub from breakfast through dinner, right in the heart of the CBD. Try out the handmade pasta and share plates, or the $10 weekday lunch specials featuring local produce, all ethically sourced. Add bacon to anything for just $3.

For those that prefer their meals without the meat, be sure to try out Govindas in the CBD or over in West End for the all-you-can-eat yummy vegetarian curry featuring a special student discount price of just $11. Serving up the freshest vegetarian options for over twenty years, Govindas is a local favourite. Over in Redhill sits another leafy legend that has a stream of customers in and out. Botanica keeps it fresh and simple, with a range of healthy breakfasts and interesting salads available making it easy for students to eat healthy and delicious foods on-the-go. You’ll even get change from a $10.

Brisbane is certainly not short of good burger joints, but make sure to chow down on the selection on offer at The Jamjar Café in Herston. Only open between 6am and 3pm and offering burgers under $15, this little gem delivers you restaurant-quality food at café prices. With enormous portions dispensed to your plate, you’ll easily be happy with a simple snack for dinner back at camp. If you’re prepared to travel a little out of town, the Getta Burger in Carina is unrivalled for their meaty offerings bringing a taste of America to a simple burger bun (there is also one in West End). They sure don’t take the easy way out, with all produce ground and smoked on the premises – not to mention spiking up those homemade sauces. Don’t forget to try the Filthy Fries that come slathered in cheese, brisket, pork, bacon, and sauce. Big yum.

Detox starts tomorrow…
